Refreshing Storage Desiccant
Estimated Time: 10-15 Minutes Total Prep + 1 Hour Cooking Per Batch Difficulty: Extremely Easy
Tools Needed
- Oven
- Cookie Sheet
- Plastic Fork
- 2 Plastic Totes
1.) Checking Desiccant Condition
- The Dry & Dry brand desiccant used in our filament dry storage boxes turns from orange to blue as they absorb moisture.
- You should check weekly that the desiccant beads are still orange, as if the top is left off a dry storage container they will rapidly absorb moisture from the air.
- Desiccant is an important part of our strategy to preserve 3D printer filament life, and it can be refreshed by heating it in an oven at 200F for an hour.
2.) Refreshing the Beads
- Preheat an oven to 200F.
- Pour all the beads that need to be refreshed into a single plastic tote. Note - It is easier to transport the desiccant beads to the oven in the tote than on a cookie sheet.
- When you are at the oven carefully pour the beads onto the cookie sheet and spread them out to a thickness of about 1/8”. NOTE - You may need to do several batches to refresh all your desiccant beads.
- Place sheet in the oven for one hour, stirring with a plastic fork at a half hour. NOTE - The beads will be extremely sticky while warm, so avoid skin contact. Pour dried beads into a sealable plastic tote and apply the lid while they cool.
